What a FINISH!!

Hello again,
First of all, I want to congratulate our State Qualifiers on the finish to their seasons.  For those who have not yet heard, we had quite a performance in Bakersfield this past weekend.  For the first time ever, we came back with two state medals, and nearly had a third!  Nicholas Fiegener became Folsom’s first Boys State Finalist since Mauricio Wright did it 1999.  Lorenzo De La Riva also made history as he became FHS’s first ever Sophomore State Placer, finishing 6th in CA.  Devon Nooner continued his incredible post season run and was one match shy of the medal round ending up in the top 12 in the state for 170.  Curtis Booth did not make it to day 2, but is the first bulldog to ever make it to state in his Freshman year.  Last year, we set a school record by finishing 19th in the state with 6 qualifiers.  This year, we broke our own record with a 14th place finish despite the fact that we only had three point scorers!!  The bar keeps getting raised which is amazing, and the wrestlers and coaches are already excited about the prospects for next year as we return almost our entire team and have a great incoming freshman class!
Speaking of next year, our off season program begins now (no rest for the weary).  I firmly believe one of the big reasons we had as much success as we did was due to the amount of time and effort everyone put in to the months between March and November.  All of the top programs in the state (which we can now say Folsom is a part of) have strong off season programs which makes a big difference.  Attached is the Mad Dawg flyer just in case you lost it.  The first practice is tomorrow and the older kids will go from 6-7:30 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Also attached is our off season strength and conditioning program with Mr. Mica.  We had a good group get involved last year and they all saw big strength gains.  I highly recommend both programs if wrestlers want to improve for next year.  You will hear me talk a lot about both at our Banquet on March 15th.
We have several wrestlers who are planning on competing this week at grade level state in Lemoore.  I have already sent out the details about this tournament, but let me know if you have any questions.  Because of this event and our younger kids getting ready for the Junior High TOC, we will be adding in a couple of extra workouts besides the normal Mad Dawg practices.  We will have a practice today from 6-7:30 and another one on Wednesday from 4-5:30 in addition to our T/TH practices this week only.  For those going to Grade level State, their Thursday practice will be at Del Oro from 6-8 pm.  They are hosting satellite weigh ins for this weekend’s SCWAY tournament.  That’s right, kids can weigh in Thursday for this weekend’s event!! They must have be preregistered and paid in system to use satellite weigh in sites, and must have scway cards.  Pre registration deadline Thursday at noon.
One last note, we had some state shirts made for the wrestlers competing in Bakersfield and their families.  If you are interested, we can reorder some more, but I need to know what size you would like and how many.  Shirts will be $12 or 2 for $20.  They have a state emblem mixed with our Folsom F on the back with the State Qualifiers names, and I will add in their accomplishments.  If we don’t have very many requests, I probably won’t order, but if we get enough that wants them I will put in for at least 20 more shirts.
Thanks, and see you at the church!
Coach Collier

2013 Masters

We had another very successful weekend at the Sac-Joaquin Masters.  We finished 2nd in the section (out of 143 teams) which was our best finish ever, beating last year’s third place team finish!  We were only behind Vacaville who is ranked #2 in the state (Folsom is now ranked #16).  Congratulations to our 2013 State Qualifiers… Curtis Booth (106), Lorenzo De La Riva (145), Nicholas Fiegener (160), and Devon Nooner (170).  Booth became our first ever freshman state qualifier, while Nooner returns for the second straight year.  De La Riva became only our second ever Sophomore Masters finalist, and Fiegener became our first Masters Champion since 2009!! Fiegener is now ranked #2 in the state and beat the #3 state ranked wrestler in overtime in the finals.
Also earning a Masters medal was Carlos Alvarez who finished 8th and was one place away from going to state  wrestling up a weight class.  Mason Koshiyama and Connor Watson both made it to day 2 and were one match shy of the medal rounds.  Andrew Coyne and Jason Bergquist both made it to the last round of day one and won matches to help contribute to our record setting finish ever at this event.  We look forward to this week’s state tournament in Bakersfield as our fantastic four will try and make their way onto the podium. If anyone else wants to go watch, we will be leaving Thursday afternoon.  Coach Thomas said he can take a few on Thursday after school, and there may be a few driving down Friday morning.  Most will be staying until Sunday, but some may return on Saturday.
After the state tournament ends, our offseason begins.  As I mentioned before, we plan on taking some wrestlers to grade level state in Lemoore Mar 8-10.  The details are listed below so you can start making plans and arrangements. This is open to anyone who wants to go, and wrestlers should be coming to practice if they plan on participating.  We will have practice Mon-Wed this week, and Mad Dawg practices begin next week and are on Tues/Thurs from 6-7:30 pm.  You should have already received a flyer from Coach Fidel.
We will also be starting our off season strength and conditioning program with Mr. Mica.  We had a great turnout last year, and the kids really got a lot out of it.  More details to come on that soon.
Finally, I loved opening up my email to see all of the votes for Nick in the sac bee poll.  We appreciate the support we have from all of our wrestling families! Speaking of support, it was great to see wrestlers, parents, alumni, and alumni parents coming down to Stockton to cheer on the Masters wrestlers.
Hope to see some of you again in Bakersfield,
Coach Collier

Another All-American!!

Congratulations to Nick Fiegener who made the Cadet Greco-Roman National finals!  Fiegener lost a close match in the finals but this was the second year in a row a Folsom High Wrestler made the national championship finals as Tianna Camous accomplished the same feat in the girl’s freestyle finals last summer.  Fiegener is now a 3X All-American going into his Junior year.

FHS State Results 2012

We traveled down to Bakersfield this past weekend to wrap up the high school season at the CIF State Championships, and had another great weekend.  We finished in the top 20 (19th) for all of California for the first time ever.  The wrestling state meet has all divisions together, unlike other sports that may have different divisions for the state championships.  There are over 800 schools in California with wrestling programs, which puts us in the top 2% of all programs in the state!

We took a school record six state qualifiers, and leading the way was Connor Pollock who finished 6th in the state at 126 lbs.  Pollock became Folsom’s 6th state placer since the tournament started in 1972.  He is also the 4th state medalist in the last 7 years for the bulldogs, joining Todd Wilcox (2006), Cody Wilcox (2007), and Jordan Hart (2009) who were all 5th at the state meet.  By placing in the top 8, Pollock has qualified for the senior nationals held in Virginia at the end of this month.  If he is able to place in the top 8 in the country, he will finish his career as a high school all-american.

Also reaching the second day of state were Nick Fiegener (145) and Jordan Alleva (285).  Both reached the top 12 and ended up one match away from the medals.  Alleva beat one of the state placers earlier in the tournament proving on any given day he could have been on the medal stand.  Fiegener went farther at state than any other Sophomore we have had competing and will have a great shot at becoming a two time state placer.

Another pair of seniors wrestling their last matches in Bakersfield were Isaias Diaz (152) and Alex Wood (195).  Both won matches at state and earned pins along the way to help contribute to our top 20 CA team finish.  Devon Nooner (160) dropped two close decisions, but he will be back next year looking to get on the medal stand.

6 State Qualifiers

Masters was a great tournament overall for our program as we tied a school record with 6 state qualifiers this year.  Congrats to Connor Pollock, Nick Fiegener, Isaias Diaz, Devon Nooner, Jordan Alleva and Alex Wood.

We also finished third at the Sac-Joaquin Masters which is our highest ever finish.  We had four other wrestlers who helped contribute to our team score and third place finish by winning matches.  Those included Carlos Alvarez, Tony Hernandez, Mason Koshiyama, and Alex Hurlimann.  Tyler Hoffman also got invaluable Masters level experience as a sophomore, and Trever Lewis qualified for Masters but could not compete due to a knee injury suffered last week.

12 Masters Qualifiers

We had twelve wrestlers compete at the Division 1 Section tournament this past weekend and they all qualified for masters!  This tied a team record and we are looking forward to this weekend where our dirty dozen (thanks John) will get a chance to qualify for state by placing in the top 7 for their respective weight class.  Thanks to those who came out to support our guys this past weekend.  We definitely made Folsom heard in Ponderosa’s gym!
